The show celebrates the 20th anniversary of Meg Okura and the Pan Asian Chamber Jazz Ensemble, a 10-piece ensemble, and marks the release of ISAIAH, PACJE’s fifth album. ISAIAH reflects Okura’s evolution over two decades as a composer, violinist, and bandleader. Written for PACJE, the music draws on jazz, chamber music, Jewish liturgical sources, and Okura’s experience as a Japanese-born, New York–based artist.
Meg Okura is a Tokyo-born, New York–based composer, violinist, and bandleader, and the founder of the Pan Asian Chamber Jazz Ensemble. A Juilliard-trained violinist, she is the winner of the International Society of Jazz Arrangers & Composers (ISJAC) Commissioning Award and the Symphonic Jazz Orchestra’s George Duke Commissioning Prize. Her work bridges jazz and chamber music while reflecting a singular cultural and artistic voice shaped by immigration and identity.

Improv Nights 2024: A Tribute to Derek Bailey
Derek Bailey was a dear friend and mentor, whose passion for pure improvisation inspired generations of musicians from a wide variety of backgrounds. For these three nights we return to the Improv Night tradition that began as benefits for The Stone, and that have been, in many ways, inspired by Derek Bailey’s legendary Company Weeks.
Each evening will present a rotating kaleidoscope of master improvisers, who will then divide into smaller improvisational units—each concert promising a unique and exciting experience.
Please join us in this heartfelt tribute to the art of improvisation, to the ever-thriving, ever-expanding Downtown Scene, and to the spirit of Derek Bailey and Company.
—John Zorn
